Sue Johnson
Sue Johnson, EdD, was an author, clinical psychologist, researcher, professor, and speaker. As a leading innovator in the field of couple therapy and adult attachment, she was the primary developer of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which has demonstrated its effectiveness in over 35 years of peer-reviewed clinical research. She was also founding Director of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT) and Distinguished Research Professor at Alliant University in San Diego, California, and Professor Emeritus, Clinical Psychology, at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Johnson has received a variety of awards acknowledging significant contributions to the field of couple and family therapy and adult attachment, including the Order of Canada and the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award from Psychotherapy Networker. Her best-selling book, Hold Me Tight, Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love (2008), is a self-help version of her ground-breaking research – how to enhance relationships, how to repair them and how to keep them. The book was developed into the Hold Me Tight® Relationship Education and Enhancement Program, with workshops taking place around the world and also offered in an online format (HoldMeTightOnline.com). The program has been translated into numerous languages and adapted for specific groups, such as Christian couples. Dr. Johnson’s best-known professional books include The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection (3rd edition, 2020), Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (2019), and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy with Trauma Survivors (2002).
